Learning a Different Way of Living
Mom in jail ... failing at school ... her home a notorious gang hangout — there weren’t many positive words to describe 12-year-old Kesha’s life.
Until she started attending a S.A.Y. Yes! Center at a nearby church in Little Rock, Arkansas.
[S.A.Y. Yes! is the biblically-based after-school curriculum for at-risk children that Here’s Life has developed and made available for inner-city churches.]
At the Center Kesha began to learn there was a different way of life from the one she knew. Part of the reason she struggled at school was because she didn’t have school supplies of her own.
She was too ashamed and embarrassed to borrow from others, so she stopped attending school whenever she could.
Through S.A.Y. Yes!, Kesha received a PowerPack, a brand new backpack filled with school supplies and Christian materials geared for youth. She received help with schoolwork, and she was directed toward the Savior.
It wasn’t long before Kesha opened her heart to Christ and was baptized at the church.
Kesha’s two younger brothers, Michael and Yahkee, started attending S.A.Y. Yes! too. The Center director explains, “All three children have received Christ. They have gone from poor behavior to good behavior. In school, the boys, though still behind, are catching, and Kesha made the Honor Roll!”
Having the love and support of the leaders at S.A.Y. Yes!, along with their own supplies for school, has given them confidence and helped them persevere despite their difficult home situation.
They are developing Christian character and hope for the future. They want to be different from the gangbangers who hang out at their home. Michael and Yahkee want to be policemen when they grow up. The director reports, “Even though everyone around them lies, they won’t lie, even if telling the truth will get them into trouble. They have learned the principle of honesty at S.A.Y. Yes!”
Help us provide brand-new PowerPack backpacks to needy children of the inner city. Our partner ministries and our after-school S.A.Y. Yes! Centers, will share these PowerPacks personally, share the Gospel, and lead the lost to faith in Christ.
