Summer in the CityGod at Work in the Long Term
When Mike Goslar and Lindsey Barnes came to Summer in the City in New York in 1998, they never imagined the long-term impact. Mike, a new believer, had had little contact with the poor or with people of other cultures, so living in New York was totally new. He loved the close community with the other students, learning from them and growing in his faith. His hardest assignment was staffing a camp for at-risk children & his eyes were opened to their pain. When Mike returned to the University of Minnesota, he carried his newly-formed heart for the poor and got involved in inner-city ministry. Mike graduated and married, and he and his wife responded to the challenge to help plant a church in the Frogtown area of St. Paul. They moved to this inner-city neighborhood and worked wholeheartedly to help the church, St. Paul Fellowship, get started. In fact, Mike became the worship leader. Lindsey is from Idaho and attended school in Utah. She, too, was amazed at the cultural diversity when she came to SITC in New York. Her eyes were particularly opened to the plight of new Americans who had come from all over the world. Her choice of medical school specialty arose from her New York experience & pediatrics to underserved immigrant communities. She chose the University of Minnesota for her specialized training, and she and her husband looked for a church in the inner city. When they walked into St. Paul Fellowship, Lindsey was amazed to see Mike Goslar leading worship! She knew she had found a church home. St. Paul Fellowship uses Here’s Life resources like Boxes of Love and Easter Bags, but perhaps their most valuable Here’s Life resource has been Summer in the City alums like Mike and Lindsey. The impact of Summer in the City goes far beyond the initial weeks of ministry!
